Thailands annual Loi Krathong Festival celebrates with great fanfare
The annual Loi Krathong Festival celebrated another year of everlasting memories for anyone who has come to experience one of Thailand’s most impressive and popular annual celebrations. Loi Krathong falls on the full-moon night of the 12th lunar month, or on 6 November this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) organised the Loi Krathong Festival 2014 at seven major destinations – Bangkok, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Tak, Ayutthaya, Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi – which are highlighted as featuring the country’s most spectacular and unique time-honoured traditions. In Bangkok, TAT organised the Delightful Colours of the River, Loi Krathong Festival 2014 at the Nakrapirom Park on the bank of the majestic Chao Phraya River. H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports presided over the Loi Krathong ceremony at Nakrapirom Park. Joining the Thai people in celebrating the impressive Loi Krathong Festival 2014 are members of the expat communities in Thailand and contestants of Miss International Queen 2014. People floated Krathongs or lotus-shaped vessels containing candles, incense and flowers down the river to express gratitude to the river goddess, and to ward off the unpleasant past and welcome good luck. The magnificent illuminated float procession along the Chao Phraya River enhanced the impressive atmosphere. The procession of the traditional Loi Krathong Festival took place from Na Phra Lan Road to Nakrapirom Park, followed by the unique Chong Priang ceremony. The spectacular fireworks display temporarily painted the skies with magnificent sights and sounds.
