Loy Krathong, the Thai Festival of Light, is said to originate from a Brahmanical festival that was adapted by Thai Buddhist, or from ancient rituals held to pay respect to water spirits and the goddess of water. The ritualistic act of sending the Krathong (or basket) down a body of water symbolizes the penitent letting go of their anger, hatred, and general sins.
